Hidden Brain is an engaging podcast that uncovers the hidden cognitive processes that shape human behaviors, and addresses the complex issues constantly evolving in our world.

In the episode “Chasing Serenity: Part 1“, the spotlight is on renowned neuroscientist Richard Davidson, who deftly combines scientific methodology to study the brain while also immersing himself in the teachings of master meditators, providing him a unique insight into the interplay between our inner and outer lives.

Richard Davidson grew up in Brooklyn during the 1960s, a time of great social and cultural change. He was fascinated by the scientific tools used to examine the brain and began studying under master meditators to learn two ways of understanding the mind: one that was objective and one that was subjective. He was drawn to both techniques and felt each had much to teach the other.

Davidson was also influenced by the counterculture movement of the 1960s, which explored how to pierce the veil of perception and break through. He was particularly taken with the Beatles and their song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, which was widely perceived to be a reference to the hallucinogenic drug LSD. He was also fascinated by the idea that thoughts and feelings can shape and influence the world.

Davidson was drawn to the idea that there is a different way of being that is accessible to all humans, and that is imbued with greater peace, compassion, kindness, and love. He was determined to bring the contemplative traditions he was learning about and the modern psychology he was being taught in his classes together and prove that meditation was relevant to Western psychology and science.

Despite the criticism he faced from his professors and colleagues, Davidson continued to pursue his research and eventually received an invitation to meet with the Dalai Lama, and had given himself a dauntingly ambitious goal to become a translator between two ways of understanding the mind.

Davidson’s perspective compliments that of our Clinical Advisor of Ketamine-Assisted Therapy. Ben Medrano. Ben’s approach is, as he puts it, “a unique blend of evidence-based complementary alternative or ‘integrative’ medicine with transpersonal psychology viewed, in part, through the lens of Buddhist theory of consciousness as well as modalities used within psychedelic assisted therapy frameworks.”

In his exploration of both the objective and subjective understanding of the mind, Davidson represents an integrative approach that resonates deeply with our own philosophy. The blending of scientific examination of the brain with personal introspective studies through meditation mirrors our commitment to combining evidence-based methods with introspective therapeutic techniques.

Davidson’s story also underscores the transformative power of unorthodox methods and open-minded exploration, a theme echoed in the psychedelic therapy sphere. His determination to merge contemplative traditions with Western psychology parallels our own commitment to bridging psychedelic-assisted therapy with established medical practice.

Moreover, his conviction in the potential of thoughts and feelings to shape our world correlates with the core belief in psychedelic therapy – that altering one’s consciousness can lead to profound changes in behavior, emotion, and overall well-being.

The way Davidson faced criticism and persisted with his research mirrors the journey of many pioneers in the psychedelic therapy field, who continue to break boundaries despite challenges.

Davidson’s narrative provides valuable insights for psychedelic therapy, affirming the potential of integrating scientific and introspective modalities and the profound impact this can have on individuals’ mental health and well-being. His journey also underscores the importance of perseverance in the face of skepticism and the potential of psychedelic therapy to serve as a transformative tool for human consciousness.
